- North of Jerusalem and Bethel and west of the River Jordan, Shiloh was a religious centre of the tribes in the 12th cent. BCE at the time of the distribution of land (Josh. 18:9). It was a sanctuary with a priesthood and Eli and his sons ministered there until the Ark [[➝ ark]] was captured by the Philistines (1 Sam. 4).
